Headshot for Lawyer Ben Hammond

Benjamin H. Hammond

Business, Real Estate, and Construction Law Attorney

Kimberly Genther, Paralegal

Ben Hammond is a founding member of Hilger Hammond. With over 20 years of legal experience, he practices business and real estate law, focusing on construction law.

Ben helps clients create, buy, and sell small businesses. He assists in the transition of businesses from one generation to another or to key employees. Ben is involved in negotiating various contracts for his business clients and litigating disputes that cannot be avoided. Ben also counsels businesses with planning, formation, financing, licensing and corporate reorganizations. He also works with many churches and nonprofits assisting them with articles of incorporation, bylaws, and the legal steps to properly leave a denomination. In doing so, much of his time is spent as a proactive problem solver.

As a member of the firm’s real estate practice, Ben focuses on commercial transactions — from letters of intent, preparing and negotiating purchase agreements, to due diligence through closing and leasing. He is a deal maker, not a deal breaker, ensuring that the terms of the deal are reasonable and fair. Related examples of work in this area include drafting easement, shared driveway agreements, and deeds. Ben also represents clients with real estate tax appeals.

A large part of Ben’s time is devoted to the people, companies, and non-profit organizations that make up the construction industry. Ben has served on boards for the Associated Builders and Contractors of West Michigan and the Association of Subcontractors of Michigan for over a decade. His clients include owner, general contractors/construction managers, trade contractors, suppliers and design professionals. Ben’s wide array of experience in this area ranges from simple construction liens to large and complex lawsuits and arbitrations. Ben frequently drafts and negotiates multi-million dollar construction contracts with an eye toward fairness and brevity wherever possible. With his diverse litigation experience, he represents his clients in state, federal, and Michigan appellate courts. He has also tried cases before administrative agencies and arbitration panels.

Ben is also an accomplished mediator. He is typically sought after to mediate construction, real estate, business or contract disputes and has a reputation for being patient, knowledgeable, and prepared.

Ben is well respected by his peers, not only for his legal work, but also for his other volunteer efforts, including serving as the President of the Grand Rapids Bar Association in 2021-2022.

“Helping people and their businesses is more than a job. It’s a calling. There’s nothing more satisfying than guiding clients through some of their most difficult legal challenges.”
